World`s Biathlon and Winter Sports Centre

ImageThe development of biathlon in Ugra has begun in the mid 70-ies. Its ‘ancestor’ was a skier from Khanty-Mansiysk Valery Zakharov. Being in the Army in Novosibirsk, he was ‘sick’ with biathlon. The promising athlete was left in the biathlon center, but he came home to start the Ugorian biathlon. The specialized biathlon school was opened in Khanty-Mansiysk (the year of 1978). Branches were established later in 9 municipalities.

In the mid nineties, the modern Nordic Ski Centre was built, which has hosted international competitions annually since 1997.

Khanty-Mansiysk is a center of skiing/alpine skiing of universal importance. Biathlon World Cup competitions are annually held in the city and tourism infrastructure has been developed quite well. In 2003 Khanty-Mansiysk was the venue for Biathlon World Championships, and now these competitions are here again. Also the 2011 IPC Biathlon and Cross-Country Skiing World Championships where skiers with a physical disability compete will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk in March-April 2011.
Fifteen hotels offered their services to tourists in 2005. All of them are fully booked during Biathlon World Cups, regional, and All-Russia conferences, etc. Every year during Biathlon World Cup more than 60 thousand tourists visit the Nordic Ski Centre in Khanty-Mansiysk, which equals to the population of Khanty-Mansiysk.
